STOKES AND ATKINSON FACE ECB INVESTIGATION OVER NIGHTCLUB INCIDENT
England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson face an England & Wales Cricket Board investigation following a nightclub incident in the early hours of Monday morning, hours after England defeated New Zealand in the first Test at Lord's. The ECB confirmed both players were present at a nightclub near the team's Kensington hotel when the incident occurred. The board stated it is seeking further information and will announce the squad for the second Test in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed of the matter.
The incident took place at the Rex Rooms on the King's Road in west London and also involved players from Saracens rugby club, who were holding their end-of-season party at the venue. Both Stokes and Atkinson are understood to have breached a midnight curfew England introduced following their winter tours of Australia and New Zealand. That curfew was implemented after a series of alcohol-related incidents during those tours, including Ben Duckett being filmed drunk and disoriented in the Queensland resort of Noosa during the Ashes tour. Harry Brook received a punishment last October following a late-night altercation with a doorman in Wellington.
The second Test against New Zealand begins at The Oval on Wednesday of next week. Should Stokes not feature, Brook would lead England in his absence. The ECB's statement referenced the second Test squad alongside its mention of the investigation, indicating sanctions are under consideration. The board has said it will provide a further update when possible.
