ANCELOTTI BLAMES TACTICAL ERROR FOR BRAZIL'S WORLD CUP EXIT

THU 30 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Carlo Ancelotti has stated that tactical changes he made during a second-half hydration break against Norway contributed significantly to Brazil's elimination from the FIFA World Cup. Brazil lost 2-1 to Norway in the round of 16, marking their earliest World Cup exit since 1990. Speaking to ESPN, Ancelotti said he believed the turning point occurred during the mandatory cooling break introduced by FIFA midway through each half. He acknowledged that the team had not actually lost control of the match when he decided to alter his tactics, a decision he now regrets.

The match was goalless when the hydration break took place. Erling Haaland scored twice late in the second half to put Norway in control, after which Brazil found it difficult to mount a comeback. Earlier in the match, Bruno Guimarães had a penalty saved, and substitute Endrick missed a one-on-one opportunity shortly after the hour mark. Ancelotti praised Norway's performance throughout the tournament, noting they controlled possession and could have won against other opponents as well. Norway subsequently reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history before losing 2-1 to England after extra time.

According to one report, Ancelotti has indicated that Neymar, Danilo and Casemiro will not play for Brazil's national team again following the World Cup disappointment. FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development Arsène Wenger stated during the tournament that the new hydration breaks did not disrupt the flow of matches or influence results.
