MAJORITY OF US ADULTS NOW SUPPORT ALL-DAY SCHOOL PHONE BANS

THU 30 JUL 2026

A Pew Research Centre survey of 9,750 US adults found that 48 percent support banning smartphones throughout the entire school day, compared with 43 percent who oppose such restrictions. This marks the first time support for all-day bans has outweighed opposition. Support for banning phones specifically during classes stands at 77 percent, up from 68 percent in 2024. The shift in public opinion coincides with increased state-level legislation on the issue.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 42 states have enacted measures addressing cellphone use in schools, whilst more than 20 states have adopted all-day bans specifically. Early studies on the effects of all-day bans show mixed results: one report found positive long-term effects on students' well-being but no evidence of impact on test scores, whilst another found higher suspension rates in the first year that later returned to normal levels and a decrease in unexcused absences. Age divides public opinion on the breadth of restrictions, with adults under 30 showing the least enthusiasm for all-day bans at just 28 percent support. Republicans favour both classroom and all-day bans more than Democrats, though both parties support classroom-only restrictions by comfortable margins.

The debate centres on whether students should regain access to phones between lessons or remain without them until the end of the school day. The National Conference of State Legislatures indicates that many state measures require districts to adopt restrictions, though implementation varies. Support for some form of phone restriction during school hours remains broadly consistent across age groups surveyed.
