REPUBLICAN SENATOR BLOCKS BLANCHE ATTORNEY GENERAL VOTE OVER FUNDING DISPUTE

THU 30 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

A group of Republican senators has delayed the confirmation vote for acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, refusing to proceed until the Department of Justice guarantees it will not establish a $1.776 billion fund previously planned by the administration. The committee vote, scheduled for Thursday morning, was called off as negotiations between Senate Republicans, the White House and the DoJ continue. Senator John Cornyn stated Thursday that he remained prepared to vote against Blanche's nomination unless his terms were met, and confirmed his office had submitted a counter-proposal to the agency the previous evening.

The Republican holdouts have characterised the planned fund as a "slush fund" and made its cancellation a condition of Blanche's confirmation to the permanent Attorney General role. Cornyn told reporters he was negotiating in good faith with both the White House and the DoJ to resolve the impasse. He suggested the dispute could be resolved quickly if the President intervened directly.

Cornyn emphasised that despite his willingness to block the nomination, he believed he had an obligation to his constituents and to Blanche to attempt negotiations. The delay marks a moment of apparent Senate Republican division from the administration on a significant personnel matter. No new vote date has been announced.
