NORRIE REACHES LOS CABOS QUARTER-FINALS; OSAKA ADVANCES IN WASHINGTON
Cameron Norrie defeated James Duckworth 6-4 6-4 in the first round of the Los Cabos Open in Mexico to reach the quarter-finals. Norrie, ranked as Britain's number two, recovered from 3-0 down in the opening set before breaking twice in the second set to secure victory. The fifth seed will face Bernard Tomic in the last eight after Tomic defeated fourth seed Karen Khachanov. Norrie extended his recent winning form, having ended a six-match losing streak with a first-round victory over Aleksandar Kovacevic.
Norrie is the second-highest ranked player remaining in the Los Cabos draw following the elimination of top seed Jiri Lehecka, who lost to Coleman Wong of Hong Kong. At the Washington Open, Naomi Osaka advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Ashlyn Krueger, who retired from the match due to an ankle injury with the score at 6-3 3-1 to Osaka. Playing for the first time since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Osaka will next face Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Osaka is the third seed and reaches her third successive quarter-final.
In the men's singles at Washington, 17-year-old Cruz Hewitt defeated Marcos Giron 6-3 6-4 in his main singles draw debut and will face top seed Alex de Minaur in the last 16; both players previously trained together despite De Minaur being ten years Hewitt's senior. Hewitt is the son of former world number one Lleyton Hewitt. De Minaur advanced by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 3-6 6-4. Jack Draper withdrew from Washington due to left arm discomfort but received a wildcard entry into the Canadian Open, whilst Novak Djokovic withdrew from Montreal but confirmed entry into the Cincinnati Masters next month.
