MICROSOFT ADDS COPILOT BUTTON TO CLASSIC OUTLOOK INTERFACE
Microsoft has redesigned how users access Copilot in Classic Outlook, introducing a new button above the ribbon that will roll out in late August to users with Microsoft 365 Copilot licences. The company stated the change will make the experience "more visually appealing and consistent" and "anchor Copilot as one connected system across Microsoft 365". The update brings Classic Outlook into line with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, where Copilot already appears above the ribbon. Administrators will be able to manage the feature, though Microsoft says it will be "available by default" for eligible users.
The redesigned button provides access to AI-powered recommendations based on the task at hand, including summarising emails or composing responses. The existing Copilot side pane remains available; the new button offers an alternative entry point rather than replacing the current functionality. Microsoft has previously faced criticism over Copilot design decisions, including a floating button in other Office applications that did not meet with universal approval. The integration reflects Microsoft's broader effort to embed Copilot throughout its productivity suite.
During its latest earnings call, Microsoft reported that the number of Copilot conversations per user nearly doubled year-on-year, with average weekly engagement on par with Outlook and Teams usage. The company stated there are over 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats. Copilot revenue increased 60 per cent quarter-on-quarter, according to CEO Satya Nadella, as the company continues investing in AI infrastructure and integration across its software ecosystem.
