WNBA DELETES VIDEO OF REESE AND BUECKERS BETTING ON GAME
Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream defeated Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings 82-81 in the final seconds on Wednesday, with the Dream scoring 30 points in the fourth quarter. Following the victory, Reese joked during her post-game press conference that she would be requesting payment from Bueckers via Apple Pay, referencing a wager between the two players. The WNBA's official page had posted a video showing the two agreeing to a $400 bet on the game's outcome during All-Star break, but deleted the video shortly after.
The deletion followed recognition that the footage violated the league's collective bargaining agreement. The WNBA's current CBA contains a provision prohibiting players from wagering money or anything of value on the outcome, score or any other aspect of WNBA competitions. According to the agreement, a player found guilty of such wagering may be subject to a fine, suspension, dismissal and disqualification from further association with the league, at the Commissioner's discretion.
The video showed Reese holding hundred-dollar bills as the players appeared to discuss the wager. Reese and Bueckers, described as close friends, engaged in on-court interactions during the match, including an exchange where Bueckers was called for blocking Reese and subsequently clapped in response. The incident drew fan reaction online, with some calling for disciplinary action against both players.
