CONVICTED FRAUDSTER TRANSFERRED $2M TO MOTHER BEFORE REFORM DONATIONS

George Cottrell, a convicted fraudster, transferred more than $2 million to his mother in the months before she made substantial donations to Reform UK and Britain Means Business, according to financial industry sources cited by the Guardian. Fiona Cottrell received one deposit of $1.4 million and two further transfers exceeding $300,000 each, and told bankers the money originated from her son when questioned about the sudden influxes. On each occasion, the transfers were made between 24 and 72 hours before Fiona Cottrell donated to either Reform UK directly or to Britain Means Business, a company controlled by Reform's deputy leader Richard Tice.

The funds passed through US-based cryptocurrency exchanges before conversion to conventional currency and transfer to Fiona Cottrell's account, with some routed via money exchange services. Two Reform sources involved in pre-2024 General Election fundraising told the Guardian that George Cottrell had assured senior party figures that money would arrive and that he was operating as a "sort of shadow treasurer" to secure additional funding for the party. The Metropolitan Police are investigating Reform's funding following a referral from the Electoral Commission, focusing on whether donations' ultimate sources were concealed.

Lawyers for George Cottrell declined to comment on the transfers beyond previous correspondence in which he did not deny giving his mother large sums but insisted that "any political donations his mother has made have been entirely her own decision, and are a matter for her". The inquiry forms part of broader scrutiny of Reform UK's financial arrangements ahead of and following the 2024 General Election. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has not made public comment on the specific allegations regarding the transfers.
