JOE ROOT REAPPOINTED ENGLAND TEST CAPTAIN; FLEMING NAMED HEAD COACH
Joe Root has been reappointed as England's permanent Test captain, with Stephen Fleming confirmed as the new Test head coach. Root, England's greatest-ever Test run-scorer, previously captained the side from 2017 to 2022 before stepping down after winning just one of his final 17 Test matches in the role. Fleming, a 53-year-old from New Zealand, replaces Brendon McCullum as Test head coach after stepping down from his position with Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings this month.
Fleming will not begin his England role until September, allowing him time with his family in New Zealand before the December tour of South Africa. Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan starting at Headingley on 19 August. Fleming previously played 10 Tests and 17 ODIs for New Zealand and has coaching experience at county level with Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, as well as in the Indian Premier League, where he led Chennai Super Kings to five titles over 17 years. Fleming was approached by England in 2009 but declined the position at that time. He will work alongside McCullum, who continues as coach of England's white-ball teams.
Root and Fleming are expected to lead England into the 2027 Ashes series against Australia. Fleming stated that his ambition is to win immediately whilst ensuring the team is well positioned for the medium and long-term future, citing the depth of young talent within the squad. The appointment follows McCullum's departure from the Test coaching role earlier this month.
