ALEXANDROVA RETIRES FROM MEMPHIS CLASSIC AS HEAT FORCES MATCH HALT

WED 29 JUL 2026 TENNIS

Ekaterina Alexandrova retired mid-match at the Memphis Classic after three hours and eleven minutes of play in extreme heat conditions. The Russian player, trailing 5-4 in the deciding set, was forced to stop when temperatures reached 93.2°F (34°C). Medical treatment was administered during an extended break, but Alexandrova was unable to continue and withdrew from the match, eventually leaving the court in a wheelchair.

Alexandrova's opponent was Kristina Liutova, a 16-year-old competing in her first WTA Tour main-draw appearance. Liutova advanced to victory following Alexandrova's retirement, securing her maiden WTA main-draw win. The match came after multiple players had voiced concerns about extreme heat and challenging weather conditions during the North American hard-court swing in Washington and Tennessee.

Liutova broke down in tears immediately after the match concluded, sobbing with her teammates in the players' box. The emotional response reflected the bittersweet nature of the victory, as the teenager's first WTA win came not through competitive completion but through her opponent's withdrawal. The WTA's Extreme Weather Policy exists to prevent such occurrences during tour events.
