OHTANI REVEALS BICEPS INJURY ALONGSIDE KNEE PROBLEM
Shohei Ohtani disclosed that he is managing a biceps injury in addition to a pre-existing knee problem, speaking publicly about his physical condition following the Los Angeles Dodgers' 7-6 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday. Ohtani stated through an interpreter that his biceps was not at full capacity, describing it as a similar issue to his knee complaint. He has not pitched since 3 July, though he has continued to play as a designated hitter, recording a leadoff home run in the match against the Mariners and finishing 3-for-4 with a walk.
The knee injury required a lubricant injection during the All-Star break, and Ohtani initially attributed the problem to faulty pitching mechanics rather than baserunning. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts explained that the biceps issue emerged as a secondary effect during a bullpen session in Philadelphia, caused by compensating for the compromised knee. Roberts noted that addressing the knee injury remains the priority, and the team has not yet decided whether Ohtani will pitch through the problems or continue as a designated hitter only.
Ohtani's ability to perform at the plate despite the injuries means the Dodgers can continue to utilise his hitting and baserunning, though his return to pitching remains uncertain. He has played 17 games as a designated hitter since his last pitching appearance. The timing of any potential return to the mound remains unclear given the additional biceps concern.
