DURHAM WOMEN FC FACES CLOSURE WITHOUT BUYER IN THREE WEEKS

MON 08 JUN 2026 W FOOTBALL

Durham Women Football Club has warned it will cease operations at all levels unless a buyer or investor comes forward within 21 days. The club, which competes in Barclays Women's Super League 2 — the second tier of women's football in England — issued a statement on Monday confirming it is seeking offers for investment or outright purchase. Durham said it has been in prolonged talks with potential investors for several months, but those discussions have collapsed in recent weeks. Without additional funding, the club says it does not have sufficient funds to operate in a fully compliant way in WSL 2 for the 2026-27 season.

Durham were founded in 2007 as a single under-10 girls' grassroots team and have since expanded significantly, with some players from the original squad now part of the first-team setup. Known as the Wildcats, the club has reached the Women's FA Cup quarter-finals twice and the League Cup last eight on two occasions. Durham's under-16 and under-21 sides both reached national finals last season. Neil Redfearn coached the first team for the final six games of the 2025-26 campaign, following a two-year spell in charge by Adam Furness. The club's majority shareholders said they can no longer keep pace with the rising costs of the women's game.

Durham were for a period the only north-east club competing within the WSL structure, though Newcastle and Sunderland now also participate in WSL 2. The Women's Super League described Durham as a valued club within the women's football pyramid. The club's statement said it is seeking a party who can build on its legacy and develop the opportunities available to it going forward.
