DEAN KREMER QUESTIONS PETE ALONSO'S VISION DURING PICKOFF ATTEMPT

WED 29 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Dean Kremer questioned first baseman Pete Alonso's ability to see during a pickoff attempt in the second game of a three-game series against Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. With one out in the bottom of the first inning and the count at 2-1, Kremer threw to first base to attempt to pick off Tigers runner Kevin McGonigle, who was 21 years old. Alonso appeared unprepared for the throw and failed to field it cleanly. Kremer responded by pointing two fingers toward his own eyes in a gesture towards Alonso, seemingly asking "Can you see?" Alonso replied "Yeah, yeah" but appeared visibly surprised by the exchange.

Broadcast commentators suggested Kremer may have been concerned that sunlight was affecting Alonso's vision at the play. Some fans and observers, however, interpreted Kremer's gesture as expressing disappointment that Alonso had not completed the pickoff play. The moment drew attention from social media accounts covering the game, with the exchange between the two teammates becoming a point of discussion among viewers and commentators.

The Orioles lost the match 14-0 to the Tigers. Kremer allowed eight hits and eight earned runs over four innings pitched. The incident formed part of what proved a difficult outing for both the pitcher and his team during the fixture.
