CURTIS MEAD SIDELINED WITH FRACTURED WRIST AFTER RED SOX DEBUT

WED 29 JUL 2026 US SPORTS

Curtis Mead suffered a fractured left wrist during his debut with the Boston Red Sox on Monday. The infielder was struck by a pitch from Athletics starter Jack Perkins in the fourth inning at Sutter Health Park during a game Boston won 4-2. Initial X-rays taken immediately after the injury came back negative, with the Red Sox diagnosing a left wrist contusion on Monday evening. Mead was replaced by Anthony Seigler and left the field in significant pain.

A subsequent medical assessment on Tuesday revealed the injury was more serious than initially reported. Mead confirmed he had been diagnosed with a fractured wrist and was scheduled to fly to Boston that evening to meet with a specialist. The club placed him on the 10-day injured list, though the length of his absence remained unclear and it was undetermined whether he would require surgery. Mead was acquired from the Washington Nationals on 25 July in exchange for pitcher Connelly Early, making this his first game in a Red Sox uniform.

The injury occurred during a difficult start to Boston's performance in the contest. The Red Sox did not record a hit until the sixth inning, when Ceddanne Rafaela hit a grand slam to account for all four of Boston's runs. Mead had entered the season with a .254 batting average, 17 home runs and 48 runs batted in across his time with the Nationals.
