US BANS IMPORTS OF ADVANCED ROBOTS AND POWER INVERTERS

WED 29 JUL 2026 HARDWARE

The United States has announced an import ban on advanced robotic devices and power inverters manufactured outside the country, according to a statement by the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday. The FCC cited "unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States or the safety and security of United States persons" as justification for the measure. The ban will apply to mobile robots, including humanoid and quadruped models, though the FCC stated the policy is not targeted at a specific country.

The ban defines an advanced robotic device as a machine capable of locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation or ground movement; equipped with sensors that perceive the surrounding environment; and containing a chip for network connectivity. Devices must weigh more than 4.4 pounds, including any docking station. By this definition, future robot vacuums would face an automatic ban unless granted a waiver by the FCC. China is a major producer of both advanced robots and power inverters, with companies including Sungrow and Huawei dominating global power inverter markets used in solar panel arrays and renewable energy systems. Chinese manufacturers have recently increased production of humanoid robots featured in viral videos and public appearances.

The import restrictions form part of a broader national security strategy to encourage domestic production of emerging technologies. In the United States, Tesla has discontinued production of its Model S and Model X vehicles to focus on manufacturing its Optimus humanoid robot. The FCC's FAQ page accompanying the announcement provides the technical specifications that will determine which devices fall under the ban's scope.
