LIV GOLF CANCELS $40M TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP IN MICHIGAN
LIV Golf is set to cancel its team championship in Michigan, which carried a $40 million purse, according to reports. An official announcement was expected following the decision. The cancellation comes three months after the Public Investment Fund announced it would cease investing in the breakaway golf circuit, having incurred losses exceeding $1 billion since the venture's inception in 2022.
LIV Golf Chief Executive Officer Scott O'Neil has sought new investment, with a funding target between $200 million and $350 million to sustain operations into 2027. The circuit had previously cancelled a $30 million event in Louisiana and implemented a two-week break for players during the 2026 season. Team captain Martin Kaymer stated to one publication that it was "highly unlikely" that the Michigan event would proceed, citing delayed answers from leadership as a source of frustration among golfers.
Players have expressed growing impatience regarding both the team event's future and communication from management. The cancellation represents an acceleration of operational challenges for LIV Golf following the loss of its primary financial backer. LIV Golf had not issued an official public statement confirming the cancellation at the time of reporting.
