AMY HUNT TAKES SILVER IN WOMEN'S 100M AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

TUE 28 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Amy Hunt secured silver in the women's 100m final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finishing in 10.98 seconds. New Zealand's Zoe Hobbs won gold in a personal best of 10.93 seconds, whilst Australia's Torrie Lewis claimed bronze. The race took place in heavy rain at Scotstoun Stadium, with Hunt describing conditions as "pretty gross" on the start line, where her fingernails were submerged underwater as she prepared to compete.

Hunt's performance came despite what she described as a "really, really terrible first 60m" and acknowledged that gold was within reach had her start been better. England has not produced a women's 100m Commonwealth Games champion since Heather Oakes won in Edinburgh in 1986, a gap of 40 years. Hunt had been favoured for victory following the withdrawals of St Lucia's Olympic champion Julien Alfred and multiple world champion Shericka Jackson, who contested only relays. In the men's 100m, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme won in a Games record of 9.83 seconds, with Australia's Lachlan Kennedy taking silver in 9.85 seconds and Nigeria's Kayinsola Ajayi bronze in 9.90 seconds.

Hunt's silver adds to the medal she won over 200m at the world championships in Tokyo last year. She reflected on the importance of competing despite difficult circumstances, noting that track athletes receive limited media representation compared to other sports. David Mullarkey of the Isle of Man also claimed bronze in the men's 10,000 metres, finishing behind Australia's Ky Robinson and India's Gulveer Singh.
