JEFFERSON BACKS LAKERS' LONG-TERM BUILD AROUND DONCIC
Former NBA champion Richard Jefferson has defended the Los Angeles Lakers' roster construction around Luka Doncic, arguing that building a title contender around a player of his calibre is a multi-year project rather than an immediate undertaking. Jefferson made the comments on the Road Trippin' podcast, acknowledging that the Lakers assembled a younger core and reshaped their roster in the offseason. He pointed to Cleveland's post-LeBron rebuild as an example that successful contenders are not constructed overnight. Jefferson noted that whilst Los Angeles still has gaps to fill, particularly at centre, the organisation has sufficient roster flexibility to continue improving over the coming seasons.
Jefferson emphasised Doncic's age as a key factor in the franchise's timeline, stating the 26-year-old should remain a top-ten player globally for approximately a decade, provided he remains healthy. The former Cavaliers forward acknowledged that debate among analysts has already shifted regarding whether the current Lakers group is ready to compete for a title immediately. Many analysts remain unconvinced the roster can contend for a championship in the near term, whilst others maintain the franchise has time to develop around its superstar. Jefferson characterised the challenge facing Los Angeles as solving "the puzzle pieces" surrounding Doncic rather than a crisis of construction.
Not all participants on the podcast shared Jefferson's optimism about the Lakers' trajectory. The disagreement reflects broader scepticism among some analysts about whether the team's current roster composition, particularly the supporting players described by some observers as not meeting championship standards, can develop into a title-winning unit alongside Doncic.
