THOMAS PIETERS PREPARES FOR DP WORLD TOUR RETURN IF LIV GOLF COLLAPSES

TUE 28 JUL 2026 GOLF

Thomas Pieters stated he would pursue re-entry to the DP World Tour if LIV Golf ceases operations, following Saudi Arabia's PIF decision to withdraw funding from the breakaway league. The Belgian golfer said he would need to enter Q School, the European qualifying examination, to regain playing rights. Pieters acknowledged the difficulty of the process, which typically reduces a field of over one thousand competitors to between 20 and 25 successful candidates across three stages and 252 holes.

Pieters made these comments three months after initially considering retirement when LIV Golf's funding uncertainty first emerged. He described a "grim atmosphere" among players when rumours of the PIF pullout circulated during an event in Mexico. LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil has been seeking approximately £350 million in new investment to keep the league operating. Pieters currently holds no remaining status on the DP World Tour following his move to LIV Golf.

The golfer expressed willingness to earn reinstatement through official channels rather than accept exemptions. He stated he would pursue invitations to tournaments but preferred to qualify through proper means to avoid criticism from DP World Tour competitors. Pieters said he retained sufficient skill to compete at the required level if LIV Golf collapsed. His comments reflect broader uncertainty surrounding LIV Golf's long-term viability as its financial position remains unresolved.
