CHELSEA SHIFT STRATEGY TOWARDS EXPERIENCED PLAYERS
Chelsea are pursuing transfers for Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck and Maxence Lacroix as the club departs from its youth-focused recruitment strategy of recent years. Henderson, who plays for Brentford, is 36 years old, whilst Welbeck, a Brighton striker, is 35. Lacroix, a Crystal Palace and France defender, is 26 and carries a reported valuation of £52 million. The club aims to complete these signings before the start of the new season under manager Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea's shift in approach marks a significant reversal from its transfer policy of the past two years, during which the club signed only one player over 25—defender Tosin Adarabioyo. Last season, the club signed ten players aged 18 to 23, including Estevao and Joao Pedro. However, a tenth-place Premier League finish and a 5-2 Champions League last-16 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain prompted a recalibration. The club received eight red cards last season, a disciplinary record that suggested deeper issues with squad mentality. The Paris defeat was marked by individual errors and lapses in conduct, including an incident in which winger Pedro Neto pushed a ballboy.
Chelsea's previous attempts to sign experienced players have produced mixed results. Raheem Sterling arrived from Manchester City in 2022 for up to £50 million but eventually left on a free transfer in January 2026 after struggling with form and fitness. Kalidou Koulibaly, signed from Napoli for £33 million, departed after one season to join Al-Hilal. The club also missed out on recent targets including John Stones, who is moving to Inter Milan, and Granit Xhaka, who Sunderland are determined to retain as captain.
