BURNHAM PLEDGES TO REDUCE NEET NUMBERS WITHOUT SETTING TIMELINE

TUE 28 JUL 2026 UK POLITICS

Andy Burnham, Prime Minister, stated he is "on a mission" to address the number of young people not in education, employment or training (Neets). Burnham said struggling young people were not responsible for the situation and committed to reducing Neet numbers during his time in office. Official figures indicate more than one million 16-24-year-olds are currently classified as Neets. When pressed on a specific timeline, Burnham declined to set a date, telling reporters during a visit to Derby that his immediate priority was halting the rising trend.

Burnham identified lack of support as a contributing factor to high Neet numbers, stating: "I cannot accept the situation where we have so many young people in their 20s on benefits." A report by former Cabinet minister Alan Milburn earlier this year warned the issue could cost Britain £125 billion without intervention. Burnham characterised tackling the Neets crisis as a priority in his first days in office. He stated that determining when numbers would fall below current levels was "hard to say" at present, but emphasised his commitment to the goal.

The pledge represents an early policy focus for the Prime Minister on youth employment and support. Burnham's reluctance to commit to a specific reduction target or timeframe reflects the complexity of the issue, though he reaffirmed his intention to reverse the current upward trend in Neet figures during his tenure.
