NAGA MUNCHETTY LEAVES BBC BREAKFAST FOR 5 LIVE ROLE

TUE 28 JUL 2026

Naga Munchetty will leave BBC Breakfast in December after 17 years with the programme to become co-presenter of BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast from January. Sally Nugent and Jon Kay announced the departure live on BBC Breakfast on Tuesday, 28 July. Munchetty confirmed the move in a statement, saying the opportunity at 5 Live "was simply too good to pass up". A new BBC Breakfast presenter will be recruited in due course.

Munchetty has served as one of BBC Breakfast's main presenters for 12 years of her tenure with the television programme. She has also presented the 5 Live mid-morning programme over the past five years, building what she described as a relationship with listeners. In her statement, Munchetty said the move would require "100% of my focus and energy" and that she would continue presenting both programmes until her departure from BBC Breakfast. She said she would continue coverage of ongoing news stories during the transition period.

The presenter said she was "thrilled" to join 5 Live Breakfast, citing her interest in live news, conversations and connecting with audiences. Munchetty described her time at BBC Breakfast as "a privilege", highlighting the "incredibly talented and hard-working" journalists she has worked alongside. She said she looked forward to bringing her experience with 5 Live listeners to the breakfast slot and starting each day with audiences from January onwards.
