FRANCE WILDFIRES ADVANCE TOWARD BORDEAUX AS HEATWAVE PEAKS

TUE 28 JUL 2026 POLITICS

French firefighters are fighting major wildfires located nine miles from Bordeaux as temperatures approach 41C under an incoming heatwave. President Emmanuel Macron described the crisis as the "most difficult situation" France has encountered since the Second World War. Over 260,000 residents across south-western France have been evacuated from their homes. Bordeaux Mayor Thomas Cazenave confirmed that authorities are preparing for "all eventualities", including arrangements to accommodate further evacuations should they be ordered.

The fires have consumed more than 42,000 hectares across France—an area four times larger than Paris. Two firefighters have been killed and 88 others injured, according to reports. Météo-France has placed the south-west region of Gironde under a yellow alert for high temperatures, with the heat expected to peak on Wednesday. Manuel Martinez, mayor of Marcheprime, told Franceinfo that his municipality is among the worst-affected areas and described the fire as "unlike anything we've seen before".

Neighbouring Spain faces a parallel emergency, with 63,000 people near Madrid under evacuation orders. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez characterised the disaster as "the most painful expression of the climate emergency". Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that the coming days represent an "absolutely crucial" period for fighting the fires given the high temperature forecasts. Government officials in both countries have warned that the battle remains ongoing, with flames continuing to advance amid the worsening weather conditions.
