JACK DRAPER WITHDRAWS FROM WASHINGTON ATP EVENT WITH ARM INJURY
Jack Draper has withdrawn from the ATP Tour event in Washington on the eve of the tournament, citing ongoing discomfort in his serving arm. The British tennis player pulled out on Monday after feeling increased soreness during practice, despite having said over the weekend that he felt physically well. Draper, 24, has been managing bone bruising in his left arm for more than a year and was working with new coach Andy Murray at the Washington event.
Draper ruled himself out of Wimbledon last month in similar circumstances, withdrawing 24 hours before his first-round match after speaking positively about his fitness beforehand. The injury, which Draper describes as complicated, has significantly limited his playing time; he has competed in only 14 matches over the past 12 months. Draper said at Wimbledon that determining when to push through pain and when to rest in an aggressive sport remained difficult.
Draper expressed hope of competing in Montreal and Cincinnati before the US Open begins on 30 August, where he reached the semi-finals in 2024. The recurring pattern of withdrawal at the last moment following positive statements about fitness represents a continued concern for the player's recovery timeline. No statement has been issued regarding revised plans for his preparation ahead of the US Open.
