FOSSIL FOOTPRINTS OF EIGHT ANCIENT HOMININS DISCOVERED IN KENYA

TUE 28 JUL 2026 ARCHAEOLOGY

Researchers have analysed fossilised footprints left by eight Paranthropus boisei hominins along the shores of Kenya's Lake Turkana more than 1.4 million years ago. The trackway was first discovered nearly 50 years ago in northern Kenya by Kay Behrensmeyer, senior research geologist and curator of vertebrate palaeontology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Behrensmeyer's team initially discovered the track site in 1978. The findings were published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and were analysed by an international team of researchers from the United States and Kenya, led by Kevin Hatala, an associate professor of biology at Chatham University in Pittsburgh and associate researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.

The fossil footprints provide evidence of group dynamics and body size amongst the ancient human relatives. Behrensmeyer has conducted fieldwork in the Lake Turkana region since 1969 and studied how local geology preserved the footprints at the site. According to Purity Kiura, a researcher at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi and co-author of the paper, the discovery reinforces the region's importance in understanding human evolution. Kiura stated the footprints represent "remarkable evidence of how our ancient relatives lived 1.4 million years ago."

The track site offers one of the most detailed snapshots of early Pleistocene hominin behaviour yet recovered, according to the research team. Kevin Hatala described each fossil site as "a snapshot of our past" and noted that researchers are "quickly building a photo album with several different windows to hominin anatomy, locomotion, behaviour and environments during the early Pleistocene." The findings underscore Kenya's position as one of the world's leading paleoanthropological landscapes and highlight the importance of protecting such sites.
