SERENA GUTHRIE WINS JERSEY SENATE SEAT AT FIRST ATTEMPT

MON 08 JUN 2026

Serena Guthrie has been elected as a senator in Jersey following the island's overnight vote count. The former England netball captain finished fifth in the islandwide ballot, receiving more than 12,000 votes in total. She defeated established politicians including Tom Binet and Alan Maclean. Guthrie stood as a candidate aligned with Value Jersey, a political movement centred on the cost of living in Jersey.

Guthrie announced her candidacy in May 2026, marking her first entry into politics. Her campaign addressed the cost of living, preventative healthcare and childcare provision. She drew on her sporting background throughout, referencing teamwork, performance and resilience in her manifesto. Guthrie represented England in netball for 15 years, making 110 appearances and captaining the side, and won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. She was appointed MBE for services to netball and retired from the sport in 2022 before returning to Jersey.

Guthrie's election brings a prominent sporting figure into Jersey's legislature for the first time. Value Jersey, the movement with which she campaigned, focused heavily on addressing the island's cost of living pressures. Guthrie confirmed her support for fellow Value Jersey candidates who also secured seats in the vote. She stated her intention to back several of the movement's policies as part of her role in the senate.
