DANI OLMO REJECTS ROBERTO AYALA APOLOGY OVER WORLD CUP FINAL CLASH

MON 27 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has rejected an apology from Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala following violent scenes at the World Cup final in New Jersey. Spain won the match 1-0 after Ferran Torres scored in extra-time, but clashes erupted at the final whistle. Ayala was captured on camera striking Olmo in the face during the disorder. Olmo told newspaper Diari de Terrassa that Ayala's apology was insincere because the coach justified his actions by claiming they were a response to something Olmo had said.

The post-match confrontation involved multiple Argentina players. Leandro Paredes kicked and punched Eric Garcia and grappled with Gavi, whilst Nahuel Molina threw a punch at Rodri. Ayala stated the incident was "more of a push than a punch" and said he would apologise in person if their paths crossed again. Olmo disputed this account, saying: "I didn't say anything to him, so he doesn't need to apologise." He added that Ayala's justification for his actions whilst claiming regret meant the coach was "lying" about being genuinely sorry.

FIFA opened an investigation into Argentina's conduct following the final whistle scenes. Olmo emphasised the responsibility players bear as role models, stating: "What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to acknowledge it with humility, honesty and dignity." The investigation could result in suspensions and fines for those involved in the altercations.
