ARSENAL BEGIN PRE-SEASON WITH DEPLETED SQUAD DUE TO WORLD CUP PLAYERS

MON 27 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Arsenal returned to pre-season training at Sobha Realty on Monday with a reduced squad, as players who competed at the World Cup remain absent. Manager Mikel Arteta will work with limited options for several weeks whilst his World Cup participants receive extended rest periods. Fifteen Arsenal players took part in the World Cup in North America over the summer and are now entitled to time away from training. Their staggered returns to the club are scheduled across multiple weeks rather than all at once.

FIFA regulations require players to receive a minimum of three consecutive weeks off between seasons. Reports suggest Arsenal may extend this break to four weeks to allow their players additional recovery time following an exhausting previous twelve months. The club's hierarchy, led by sporting director Andrea Berta, are keen to strengthen the squad despite Arsenal's Premier League title success last season. The Gunners are targeting Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, whilst also pursuing attacking reinforcements including Julian Alvarez and Barcely Barcola.

Arteta has indicated the need to complete signings quickly given the shortage of available players in the early weeks of the upcoming campaign. Arsenal's strategy reflects their ambition to build a sustained period of success at Emirates Stadium as rival clubs navigate periods of transition. The club's recruitment plans aim to develop further upon last season's title-winning performance.
