KYLE LARSON CRASHES OUT OF BRICKYARD 400 AFTER TIRE FAILURE

SUN 26 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Kyle Larson's left-front tire failed during Stage 1 of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis, sending his No. 5 Chevrolet into the Turn 3 wall and ending his race. The crash occurred moments after his crew chief, Cliff Daniels, instructed Larson to push the car harder to test its limits before the stage concluded. Larson was running second at the time of the failure and had cycled back to the lead earlier in the stage as the lead pack completed pit cycles. Daniels had told Larson moments before the incident: "We will be in position to win this stage."

The incident marks Larson's third finish of 34th or worse in the last four races, following a 15th-place result at North Wilkesboro the previous weekend. Larson entered the Indianapolis weekend sixth in the championship standings. The crash extended his NASCAR Cup Series winless streak to 46 races, despite capturing the 2025 championship. The timing compounds concerns for Hendrick Motorsports as it attempts to reverse recent struggles and build a points buffer ahead of the 10-race Chase format.

The result represents a significant setback for Larson's title defence. The championship structure means recent poor finishes have eroded his competitive position at a critical point in the season. Larson's crew will need to assess whether the tire failure resulted from a manufacturing defect or damage sustained during earlier racing.
