BERLIN PRIDE ATTACK SUSPECT SHOT DEAD BY POLICE
Abdul Ballout, the suspected attacker in an incident at Berlin Pride festival, was shot and killed during a police operation at an allotment garden complex in Spandau. According to local media reports, Ballout drove a van into a crowd near the Pride festival site, killing one person and injuring others. One report recorded 29 injured; another stated 16 injured. Ballout reportedly used a machete during the attack, which occurred a few hundred metres from the Pride closing party.
German authorities are treating the incident as a terror attack motivated by Islamic extremism. Ballout was German-born and had previously sought to join the Islamic State group. In May, he received a suspended sentence following conviction for preparing a serious act of violence and publishing Islamic State propaganda. Police identified him as 21 years old, approximately 1.90 metres tall with black hair.
The attack has prompted concerns about security arrangements at major events across Germany. The incident represents a significant security challenge for event organisers and authorities in the country. No further details regarding the police operation that resulted in Ballout's death have been confirmed. Investigations into the circumstances of the attack remain ongoing.
