UKRAINIAN DRONE ATTACK KILLS 11 IN RUSSIAN-HELD CAMP, IRAN SUMMONS ENVOY...

SUN 26 JUL 2026 EUROPE

Russian-installed authorities in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region reported that at least 11 people, including five children, were killed in an overnight drone attack on a holiday camp in a Russian-held area on Saturday. The authorities accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians. Separately, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Ukraine's chargé d'affaires in Tehran on Saturday to protest what it described as a "hostile and criminal" attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which the ministry said killed one sailor and injured another.

Iran's ministry claimed the attack on the vessel had been acknowledged by Ukrainian leadership. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the incident in a phone call with the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas. Iran described the incident as a violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and warned it could further inflame the Russia-Ukraine war. Araghchi called for a firm response from the United Nations Security Council, the European Union and the international community, and for those responsible to be held accountable.

An Al Jazeera correspondent reporting from Tehran noted that Iran is managing pressure from a United States blockade on its southern coast alongside the attacks on its northern maritime trade. Iran's government warned it would defend its national interests in response to what it characterised as Ukrainian aggression. The incidents mark an expansion of military operations affecting parties beyond the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
