SAKHO SENT HOME FROM LIVERPOOL USA TOUR AFTER RULE BREACH

SUN 26 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Mamadou Sakho was sent home early from Liverpool's pre-season tour of the United States during the summer of 2016 after breaching club discipline rules, according to reporting on the incident. The French defender was caught on camera laughing in the background whilst manager Jurgen Klopp gave an interview at Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. Klopp publicly addressed the breach during the filmed interaction, referencing that Sakho had arrived late for the squad's departure from Liverpool.

Sakho arrived at Liverpool from Paris Saint-Germain in September 2013 for £18 million under manager Brendan Rodgers. Klopp took charge in October 2015 and implemented strict disciplinary standards during his first pre-season the following summer. According to Klopp's account, Sakho nearly missed the team's flight departure, missed a training session and was late for a meal. The defender officially retired from professional football in 2026 at age 36, having been without a club since May 2025.

Klopp stated at the time that he considered it appropriate for Sakho to return to Liverpool ahead of the squad's return from the USA tour, allowing time for discussion about the breaches. The manager characterised the decision as measured discipline rather than severe punishment, emphasising that the club maintained rules that required respect from all players.
