WHITBREAD TO CLOSE ALL 106 BEEFEATER RESTAURANTS BY SEPTEMBER
Whitbread will close all 106 Beefeater restaurants across the UK on 10 September 2026 as part of a major restructuring plan aimed at saving £250 million. The closures will affect approximately 3,800 jobs nationwide. The company has shifted its strategic focus towards operating as a pure-play hotel business, with many pub-restaurant sites to be sold or converted into Premier Inn bedrooms and integrated hotel dining spaces. Customers were informed of the closure through a letter sent to Beefeater reward club members.
Whitbread chief executive Dominic Paul cited "significant cost increases" in April as the driver for the overhaul, which encompasses the closure of remaining Beefeater and Brewers Fayre branded establishments. Fourteen Beefeater and Brewers Fayre sites operate in Wales, including the Coldra in Newport, the Waterfront in Swansea, and Bagle Brook in Port Talbot. A Whitbread spokesperson stated the company expects to "retain a significant proportion of those affected" and will seek to redeploy "as many of our impacted colleagues as possible". Closure dates for Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block have not yet been confirmed.
The restructuring represents a substantial departure from Whitbread's long-standing pub-restaurant business model. The company has not disclosed how many of the 106 sites will be converted to hotel use versus sold to external operators. Staff affected by the closures will be offered alternative roles within Whitbread's hotel division where positions become available.
