GUARDIOLA DECLINES ITALY NATIONAL TEAM HEAD COACH ROLE

SAT 25 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Pep Guardiola has declined an offer to become head coach of Italy's national football team, according to reports. The Italian Football Federation held talks with Guardiola about the position, with FICG technical director Paolo Maldini and federation head Giovanni Malago confirming the organisation approached him. The discussions did not progress to an agreement, with Guardiola reportedly turning down the opportunity.

Guardiola left Manchester City in May after a decade with the club. During his time there, he achieved 416 wins across 593 matches and won six Premier League titles. The 55-year-old has previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich but has not held a position coaching at international level. His decision to decline the Italy role leaves him searching for his next employment.

Italy's national team is attempting to rebuild after failing to qualify for the past three World Cups, including the 2026 tournament. The team last won the World Cup in 2002. The FICG also approached current Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti about the position, though Ancelotti remains under contract with Brazil through 2030. Reports indicate that legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo is set to be appointed as Italy's men's national team head coach.
