EIGHT FOUND DEAD IN SUSPICIOUS MICHIGAN HOUSE FIRE
Eight people, including six children aged between five and 15, have been found dead following a house fire in Michigan that authorities describe as suspicious. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office discovered the bodies on Friday 24 July after responding to reports of white smoke coming from a residence in the 14900-block of Riverside Trail in Grand Haven Township. Emergency services initially attended the area between 8:30am and 9am after reports of smoke but found no fire at that time. Deputies and fire personnel returned to the scene around 11:40am following further calls and made the discovery inside the property.
Capt. Jacob Sparks of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said at an evening news conference that authorities had not yet fully identified all victims and that an official cause of death had not been formally established. He confirmed that some of the eight people had gunshot wounds, though he did not specify how many. Sparks stated that investigators were not seeking outside suspects and that one working theory was murder-suicide, with everyone who lived in the home appearing to be deceased. Michigan State Police arson investigators attended the scene. Sparks described it as "a complicated scene, a complex scene" and said there was reason to believe the fire was intentionally set.
Grand Haven Township, located 25 miles west of Grand Rapids on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, has a population of approximately 18,000. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities continuing their work to identify victims and establish the full circumstances of the deaths.
