PEPPERMINT EXTRACT SUGGESTED AS LOW-COST RAT DETERRENT
Pest control specialists are advising UK homeowners to remain alert to increased rat activity as temperatures climb during the summer months. Rats and mice typically become more active during warmer weather, when food sources become more accessible, particularly in residential areas where wheelie bins, bird feeders and compost heaps can attract rodents. According to pest control professionals, peppermint ranks amongst the scents rats find most repellent due to its powerful aroma. A 60ml bottle of peppermint extract is available at Asda for £1.47, making it a low-cost natural deterrent option.
Many homeowners use peppermint oil and peppermint extract around entry points inside properties and in outdoor areas as a natural rat repellent. John Whiteley-Wilkson from Acorn Environment Services stated that rats search constantly for food, water and shelter, particularly during spring when outdoor activity increases. He noted that strong smells such as peppermint can sometimes discourage rats from lingering in certain areas. However, Whiteley-Wilkson emphasised that prevention remains the single most important measure for managing rat activity.
Specialists have advised homeowners to focus primarily on removing anything that attracts rodents in the first place, rather than relying solely on natural repellents. Whilst peppermint-based deterrents may help reduce rat activity, pest control professionals recommend a comprehensive approach to property management. The guidance comes as the UK experiences what is being described as a record-breaking summer in terms of temperatures.
