SCOTT WINS COMMONWEALTH GOLD IN 200M MEDLEY
Duncan Scott won Scotland's first gold medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, triumphing in the men's 200m individual medley final at Tollcross international swimming centre. The 29-year-old set a games record time of one minute 56.28 seconds. Scott took the lead during the backstroke leg and extended his advantage through the breaststroke, finishing ahead of New Zealand's Lewis Clareburt, with England's Tom Dean taking bronze.
Scott described the victory as "relief" rather than elation, stating he had sought to establish an early pace through a strong backstroke split. He told the crowd he hoped the result would generate momentum for the Scottish team throughout the remainder of the competition. Scott indicated he would fully assess his performance only after the games concluded, noting that he typically evaluates major competitions across their full duration rather than immediately after individual races.
Adam Ramsay-Peaty, a three-time Olympic gold medallist, advanced to the men's 100m breaststroke final after winning his semi-final in 59.19 seconds. Faye Rogers won gold in the women's 200m individual medley SM10 final, generating significant crowd support. Scottish Paralympic swimmer Stephen Clegg recorded silver in the men's S13 100m freestyle earlier in the evening.
