ALEX BOWMAN TO RETIRE FROM NASCAR AFTER 2027 SEASON

FRI 24 JUL 2026 F1/MOTORSPORT

Hendrick Motorsports announced that Alex Bowman will retire from full-time NASCAR Cup Series competition after the 2027 season. Bowman, aged 33, stated that he will not change his decision even if he wins a championship in his final year. He said winning the Cup Series title would serve as "an amazing" way to end his career, but would not persuade him to continue racing beyond 2027.

Bowman cited physical and emotional factors in his decision. He disclosed that a vertigo incident earlier this season prompted discussions about retiring after 2026, though he chose to extend his career through 2027 to finish on better terms with Hendrick Motorsports. He also referenced ongoing effects from a 2023 sprint car accident and a collision at Michigan last summer, both of which he said caused significant damage. Bowman stated that racing drains emotional energy and that he does not want negativity from difficult weekends to affect his family life as he prepares for the next chapter with fiancée Chloe Henderson.

Despite stepping back from full-time competition, Bowman indicated he will remain involved with Hendrick Motorsports in other capacities. He said he anticipates continuing to be active with Hendrick Performance following his retirement from driving. Most drivers typically keep options open for extended careers, but Bowman emphasised his intention to depart the sport entirely after 2027.
