ANTHROPIC LAUNCHES OPUS 5 MODEL WITH ENHANCED CYBERSECURITY
Anthropic released its Opus 5 model on Thursday, positioning it as a capable alternative to its larger Fable 5 offering. The company stated that Opus 5 "comes close to the capabilities of Claude Fable 5 in many domains" and performs substantially better at complex coding tasks. One report indicated that Opus 5 outperforms Fable 5 on a number of benchmarks included in the announcement, whilst being cheaper and less restrictive than Fable.
The release follows weeks of negotiations between Anthropic and the US government over cybersecurity concerns regarding the Fable 5 model, which was taken offline temporarily and subsequently restored with strengthened cyber safeguards. Anthropic incorporated enhanced cybersecurity safeguards into Opus 5 beyond those present in the previous Opus iteration. When asked whether the company submitted Opus 5 for government review prior to its public launch, Anthropic spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri told one outlet: "We continue to work with our government partners to conduct their own independent testing of our models. This includes Opus 5."
Anthropic is targeting Opus 5 primarily at enterprise customers, marketing it for knowledge work and biology applications as an everyday model suitable for general use. The company continues to position Fable 5 as the preferred option for the most demanding workloads and long-horizon AI agent projects. The release reflects an emerging regulatory environment for artificial intelligence development, particularly following recent security discussions within the technology sector.
