JOE MIXON HINTS AT NFL RETIREMENT AT 29 AFTER FOOT INJURY

FRI 24 JUL 2026 US SPORTS

Joe Mixon, formerly of the Cincinnati Bengals, has indicated he may retire from American football at 29 years old following a foot injury sustained during the 2025 offseason. According to NFL Insider Aaron Wilson, Mixon told former Bengals teammates his career is over, though he has not filed formal retirement papers. Mixon missed the entire 2025 season after the injury placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list. The Houston Texans released him in March 2026.

Wilson reported that Mixon underwent surgery to address the foot condition, which he clarified was not a self-inflicted gunshot wound as some rumours suggested. The nature of the injury has not been publicly disclosed in detail. Wilson stated that while Mixon has recovered sufficiently to return to daily activities, his condition has not improved enough to enable his return to play. Wilson expressed hope for a potential comeback but described the situation as "probably over".

Mixon spent eight seasons in the NFL, starting 102 of 111 games played. Official records show he rushed for 7,428 yards and scored 60 touchdowns, whilst also receiving 319 passes for 2,448 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. His potential retirement would mark the end of a productive professional career, though no confirmed timeline for any future decision has been announced.
