NIGERIA WINS OPENING 3X3 BASKETBALL MATCH AT GLASGOW COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Team Nigeria recorded its first victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Friday, defeating the Cayman Islands 21-17 in a men's 3×3 basketball Pool A match. The win followed Nigeria's initial appearance at the Games in swimming events, where Clinton Opute finished sixth in Heat 1 of the men's 200m individual medley. The basketball team played with speed and discipline to overcome the Cayman Islands side in their opening fixture.
Nigeria is represented by 74 athletes competing across 10 sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The National Sports Commission stated it aims to win between 16 and 20 gold medals at the Games. Director General Bukola Olopade attended the basketball match and addressed the players afterwards, urging them to remain focused despite the opening victory. He stated: "This is the kind of start we were hoping for. Congratulations to the team for their fighting spirit and determination."
The victory is expected to provide the Nigerian team with momentum ahead of further events scheduled for Friday, including boxing and para powerlifting competitions. Nigeria's Commonwealth Games participation dates to 1950, since which the nation has recorded 271 medals: 82 gold, 84 silver and 105 bronze. The National Sports Commission highlighted its commitment to supporting the team throughout the competition.
