SCIENTISTS IDENTIFY EIGHT BASIC SOUND BLOCKS UNDERLYING ALL BIRDSONG

FRI 24 JUL 2026

Scientists in France have discovered that the world's birdsong, despite its vast diversity, comprises just eight fundamental acoustic building blocks. A team led by Quentin Bacquelé analysed approximately 116,000 songs from over 3,000 songbird species using a global database of recordings contributed by volunteers. The eight motifs identified consist of three types of trill, three types of whistle, chaotic notes and harmonies. The study was published in the journal Science and employed artificial intelligence to compare songs at an unprecedented scale.

Researchers from the Bioacoustics Research Lab in CRNL, France, found that each songbird species typically uses only about five of the eight available motifs in its repertoire, with most species relying heavily on one dominant motif. The study examined detailed acoustic patterns across time and frequency rather than simple sound features like pitch alone. Environmental factors significantly shape how birds combine these motifs; flat whistles are favoured in tropical rainforests where dense vegetation limits sound transmission, whilst more complex compositions with ultrafast trills are common in temperate forests where birds communicate over shorter distances. The researchers concluded that the eight acoustic motifs evolved early in birdsong's history and were repeatedly adapted to local conditions.

Bacquelé noted that the diversity of global birdsong remains enormous, with distinctly different songs heard across Asia, Africa and Amazonia. The findings reveal what the research team described as "a simplicity underlying the spectacular diversity of birdsongs". The discovery offers fresh insights into how environmental pressures have shaped communication strategies across songbird species, which number over 6,500 and comprise almost 60 per cent of all bird species.
