TURKISH GOVERNOR DISMISSED AFTER CYCLING SHORTS PHOTOGRAPHS
Mehmet Fatih Cicekli, governor of Ardahan province in eastern Turkey, was dismissed by presidential decree on 17 July, signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The dismissal offered no official explanation. The action followed public criticism from Turkish politicians regarding Mr Cicekli's choice of tight cycling attire during a public event promoting cycling and his subsequent social media posts. Mr Cicekli has since become the focus of a campaign calling for his reinstatement, with public support emerging for his return to office.
Inan Akgun Alp, a member of the opposition Republican People's Party, accused Mr Cicekli of prioritising social media over official duties and deemed the tight clothing inappropriate for a governor. Samil Tayyar, a former legislator from Mr Erdogan's ruling party, argued the attire conflicted with cultural norms in the conservative Ardahan region, stating that other politicians wore sweatpants when cycling. Mr Tayyar wrote that whilst people could wear what they chose in private, a governor could not visit the public in tight clothing whilst on duty, as it did not align with the seriousness of the state. Mr Cicekli, appointed by Mr Erdogan in January, defended his choice by describing himself as an athlete who practises sailing, rowing and cycling.
The dismissal marked an unusual intervention in a governor's professional conduct based on clothing choices at a public event. Mr Cicekli's subsequent public support suggests division over whether the dismissal was proportionate. No further official statement regarding the case has been issued.
