GOLDING WARNS CHAMBLISS AND LACY AGAINST FOLLOWING KIFFIN TO LSU

THU 23 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Pete Golding, Ole Miss's head coach, used Lane Kiffin's departure to LSU as a cautionary tale to persuade quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy to remain with the Rebels. Golding told both players to research how the fan base had turned on Kiffin after he left for LSU in November, according to comments made at SEC Media Days and relayed by ESPN's David Hale. Golding stated that fans would have built Kiffin a statue three days before his departure but had since rejected him entirely. He warned Chambliss and Lacy that the same reaction would follow them if they transferred.

Kiffin departed Ole Miss after leading the programme to an 11-1 regular season and its first College Football Playoff appearance. He agreed a reported seven-year, $91 million contract with LSU. Golding's pitch to his players emphasised legacy and community ties over financial incentives. He told Chambliss and Lacy that the alumni network and lasting reputation built in Oxford would prove more valuable long-term than immediate payment from another programme.

Chambliss confirmed in January that LSU had been a genuine consideration following Kiffin's departure but decided his loyalty to Ole Miss took precedence. Lacy stated that Golding's message influenced his own decision to remain. One report indicated Golding said the players had researched Kiffin's name in his office as part of the conversation, whilst another account presented the remarks as part of a broader discussion about legacy and career longevity beyond football.
