IAN MACHADO GARRY DISCUSSES MASCULINITY AHEAD OF UFC TITLE FIGHT

THU 23 JUL 2026 BOXING

Ian Machado Garry discussed his views on masculinity and emotional expression during an appearance on the High Performance podcast weeks before facing Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title at UFC 330. Garry stated that he cries whilst watching animated films and said he believes embracing his feminine side has made him a stronger man. He declared that he does not concern himself with others' opinions of him or his behaviour. Garry emphasised that being a real man involves keeping one's word, emotional honesty, and prioritising family in the face of adversity.

During the same interview, Garry stated that the world would be a better place if women made decisions globally. He described his wife Layla Machado as his "earth angel" and someone he seeks guidance from regularly. Garry said that any intelligent man should recognise his wife as "the person I need to listen to" and suggested that if women ran the world, life would be "simpler and easier". The Irish fighter said these views align with his broader stance on masculinity, which he believes has been misunderstood.

Garry's comments divided opinion online following the interview. The fighter, aged 28, has previously spoken about his perspective on what constitutes genuine masculinity. His remarks came in advance of his scheduled bout with Makhachev next month.
