CHICAGO CUBS FAN WHO STRUCK ANOTHER DECLINES FURTHER ACTION

THU 23 JUL 2026

The Chicago Cubs declined to pursue disciplinary action following a viral video showing a fan striking another fan in the head during the national anthem before a game against the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field on Sunday. The video, which circulated online on Monday and Tuesday, depicted an older man appearing to berate a younger fan before slapping him on the back of the head after being rebuffed. The younger fan subsequently stood up. The man who was struck told the club he did not want anyone ejected or further action taken, and the Cubs respected his wishes.

The older fan later spoke to Inside Edition on Tuesday, stating he wished he could take back the strike. He revealed that the two fans had reconciled during the game, shaking hands and sharing beers whilst conversing. The man said: "Even though I fought in Vietnam and I had buddies killed, we fight for the rights of people and that's one of his rights. I overreacted. I could've handled it better. I wish I would have. But my feelings are still the same: people should stand." The Cubs won the game 10–1.

The Cubs issued a statement on Tuesday confirming that its security team spoke with the fan who was struck. The club said it prohibits physical confrontations between fans and expects all guests to follow its Fan Code of Conduct. A Cubs spokesperson said: "The National Anthem is an important tradition at Chicago Cubs games. While we respect the rights of individuals to decide for themselves, we encourage every fan to stand, if they are able, and to remove their caps whilst the anthem is being played. At the same time, the safety and security of our fans is our top priority."
