BOSTON RED SOX TIES FRANCHISE RECORD WITH 15-GAME WINNING STREAK
The Boston Red Sox tied their franchise record of 15 consecutive wins after defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6–3 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Red Sox and Orioles were scheduled to play on Tuesday, but inclement weather forced postponement of that match. Boston secured the tie with its victory in Game 1 on Wednesday afternoon, with the team holding a chance to break the franchise record in Game 2 later that day.
Caleb Durbin opened the scoring in the first inning with a single to centre field that plated two runs with the bases loaded. Jarren Duran followed with a triple that scored Willson Contreras and Durbin, extending Boston's lead to four runs in that inning. Duran added a sacrifice fly in the third inning that scored Durbin, whilst Cedanne Rafaela hit a solo home run in the fourth to make the final score 6–3. Starting pitcher Jake Bennett allowed three earned runs over 5⅔ innings on nine hits, with relief pitchers Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman closing out the match.
The winning streak began on 3 July with a 5–2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, moving Boston to a 38–48 record at that time. The Red Sox now hold a 52–48 record and sit third in the American League East. The previous franchise record of 15 consecutive wins was set in 1946 by a Red Sox team led by Ted Williams, which finished the season 104–50. Baltimore named Kyle Bradish as its starter for Game 2; Bradish recently signed a five-year extension with the Orioles.
