EMMANUEL ACHO SAYS STEPHEN A. SMITH COULD HAVE PREVENTED RYAN CLARK FIRING

WED 22 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Emmanuel Acho, a former FOX Sports analyst, has stated that Stephen A. Smith possessed the power to prevent Ryan Clark's dismissal from ESPN but chose not to exercise it. Acho made the remarks on a podcast called Speakeasy, following ESPN's decision to fire Clark, a former Pittsburgh Steelers safety who had worked at the broadcaster for over a decade. Smith publicly expressed disappointment about Clark's departure, calling him a "friend" and "brother" whilst stating he was unhappy with the decision. Acho characterised Smith's response as inconsistent given Smith's position within the organisation.

Acho argued that both Smith and ESPN's executives possessed sufficient authority to prevent the firing. He suggested that Smith could have approached management to advocate for Clark's retention or made a personal financial sacrifice to protect Clark's employment. Acho cited his own career experience, stating that he had once accepted a $25,000 pay cut to fund a colleague's $25,000 pay raise whilst earning $800,000 annually. Smith signed a five-year contract worth $105 million with ESPN and serves as a commentator and executive producer on the network's First Take programme, according to the report. Clark joined ESPN in 2015 after retiring from professional football.

Smith addressed the layoffs on his podcast, Straight Shooter With Stephen A., stating he was unhappy with ESPN's decision and had communicated his displeasure to senior management. The firing formed part of a broader round of redundancies at the broadcaster. No statement from Smith responding to Acho's remarks was included in the available information.
