ZELENSKY REPLACES UKRAINE MILITARY COMMANDER SYRSKYI WITH DRAPATYI

WED 22 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

President Volodymyr Zelensky removed General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces following days of protests, according to reporting. Syrskyi, appointed in 2023, was replaced by Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi. The change followed sustained pressure from within the military and among the Ukrainian public over Syrskyi's leadership approach and personnel decisions.

Syrskyi had directed Ukraine's defence of Kyiv during Russia's initial assault in February 2022 and orchestrated a counteroffensive that reclaimed territory in the Kharkiv region later that year. However, critics stated he retained rigid hierarchical command methods associated with Soviet-era military training and expressed concern about casualties under his command. A major with the nom de guerre "Hrizny", who leads an air defence unit in Kyiv, stated that Syrskyi's approach alienated younger officers trained under NATO standards and Ukrainian post-independence military culture. Hrizny, a 26-year-old former law student, said Drapatyi held a reputation for receptiveness to new ideas and willingness to listen to subordinates.

Drapatyi's appointment has received approval from serving officers and military personnel. Hrizny identified leave policies and soldier welfare as particular areas where the new commander's approach is expected to differ from his predecessor. A former member of Ukraine's general staff, Colonel Andriy F, declined to provide additional comment beyond welcoming the leadership transition. The change represents a shift in Ukraine's military command structure as the conflict with Russia continues.
