ARTIST SUES FIFA FOR $25M OVER DALLAS MURAL REMOVAL

MON 08 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

An artist has filed a $25 million lawsuit against FIFA following the removal of a mural in Dallas. The work was painted in the city ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the United States co-hosts alongside Canada and Mexico. Officials ordered the mural covered up, prompting the legal action. The artist argues the removal violated their rights under United States federal law.

The Visual Artists Rights Act (VARA) protects certain works of public art in the United States from destruction or alteration without the creator's consent. The artist contends the mural qualified for protection under this legislation. FIFA oversaw preparations across multiple host cities in the United States, with Dallas designated as one of the official match venues. The cover-up took place as part of works connected to those preparations.

The lawsuit represents one of the more significant legal challenges to emerge from the World Cup's pre-tournament activities in the United States. VARA claims can carry substantial financial penalties where courts find wilful infringement. The case is now proceeding through the United States legal system. FIFA has not confirmed any public response to the filing at this stage.
